Delta Upsilon and NIC Support Collegiate Housing Infrastructure Act
April 11, 2017 - Fraternities and sororities provide affordable housing for more than 370,000 college students across the U.S. On many campuses, this housing provides a home away from home for members, fostering brotherhood, community and academic development. Unfortunately, donations made locally or nationally for fraternity housing are generally not tax-deductible.
In April 2017, Delta Upsilon partnered with the North-American Interfraternity Conference and dozens of other fraternities and sororities to support the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA), which would allow for charitable funds to be given to existing foundations earmarked for housing and facility purposes allowing for more safe, modern and affordable fraternity and sorority housing. CHIA enjoys a strong history of bipartisan support as it would make higher education more affordable with a minimal cost to taxpayers by offering a less expensive housing alternative.
In a grassroots campaign, DU asked members to urge their Congressmen to ensure CHIA (H.R. 1200/S. 736) is included in tax reform conversation. By utilizing a special website, members can contact their representatives and senators and ask them to co-sponsor CHIA and support its inclusion in the tax code.
The hope is for this campaign to spur action at a critical time for CHIA and tax reform.
