Delta Upsilon Mourns the Passing of John McConnell
April 4, 2017 - This week, Delta Upsilon International Headquarters has been flying the DU flag at half-mast in memory of brother John McConnell, DePauw ’66. John passed away March 27. He served on the International Fraternity Board of Directors from 1987-1988 and had been serving on the DU Educational Foundation Board of Trustees since 2014.
He was born June 4, 1944, to Herbert and Ruth McConnell of Salem, Indiana. He attended DePauw University where he received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics. He also received a master’s of arts degree in ecominics and a certificate in Russian and East European studies from University of Michigan.
Per his obituary, “John was a managing associate at Bentz Whaley Flessner where his expertise was in campaign planning and implementation, major gift strategy development, and training institutional leaders, staffs, and volunteers in their fundraising efforts. Previously he held senior development positions at DePauw University, Purdue University, University of Alberta (Canada), and University of Denver. At a time when universities are grappling with diminished budgets, John pioneered ingenious ways of raising funds to support institutions of higher learning that he revered.”
John is survived by his wife Bettina McConnell, son Matthew McConnell and daughter-in-law Joanna Steinberg.
